How Much Does a Custom Wedding Dress Cost in Melbourne? A 2026 Guide

If you’ve started looking into custom wedding dresses, you’ve probably realised one thing very quickly, there’s no simple answer to “How much does a custom wedding dress cost?”

The truth is, every custom gown is different, as is every bespoke boutique. The cost depends on the design, fabrics, construction, embellishments, brand and the amount of craftsmanship involved in creating a dress that’s made exclusively for you.

At Brides of Armadale, we’ve been helping Melbourne brides create their dream wedding dresses for over 25 years. Before 2014 we were a stockist for various designers across the globe and since 2014 we have been creating fully customisable wedding gowns.

Every gown here at BOA is designed by our in-house designers, Suzie and Emma, they are professionally fitted and tailored in our Melbourne boutique by our inhouse tailor Siew through a process refined over many years of custom gowns. Our gowns aren’t ordered from a catalogue. We work with you to create a gown that reflects your style, your body and your wedding.

In this guide, we’ll explain what affects the price of a BOA custom wedding dress so you can understand where your investment goes.

What Is the Average Cost of a Custom Wedding Dress in Melbourne?

Most custom wedding dresses in Melbourne typically range between: $4000 and $30,000.

Whereas here at BOA, our custom gowns range from $5000 to $12,000.

The final investment depends entirely on the complexity of the design, your time frame, fabrics used and so on.

Rather than being charged for the label on the dress, your investment reflects the design process, the quality of the fabrics, and the skilled craftsmanship required to create a gown specifically for you. We are deliberately called Brides of Armadale and not a brand name as it’s not about us, it’s about YOU. We are a collective of creativity and inspiration to individuality.

What Affects the Cost of a Custom Wedding Dress?

1. The Design

The biggest factor is simply the design itself.

A sleek crepe gown with clean lines requires a very different amount of work compared with a fully embellished lace gown with intricate detailing.

For example:

Simple Design

You’ve fallen in love with one of our designs that has no lace or beading, chosen minimal changes such as swapping satin buttons for pearls or changed the neckline to a square neck instead of a strapless.

Typical investment:
$ 4,500 – $6,000

Moderate Design

You adore one of our laced gowns, whether it be fitted or A-line, it has some beading either lightly hand applied or manufactured onto the fabric already.

Typical investment:
$6,000 – $7,500

Couture-Level Design

You’ve found that no matter where you go, you can’t seem to find the right thing, you want to choose your own fabric and get creative. You adore our store, process and experience and want to utilise other shapes, necklines or concepts from other designs you’ve tried or thought of yourself, to create a completely custom one of a kind.

Typical investment:
$7,500 – 12,000

2. Fabric Choice

Fabric has a significant impact on both the appearance and cost of your gown.

Some of the fabrics we commonly work with include:

  • Satin
  • Mikado
  • Chiffon
  • Organza
  • Tulle
  • Full pattern lace
  • Chantilly lace
  • Beaded lace
  • Beaded/Sequin patterns
  • Applique lace
  • Crepe
  • Charmouse

Premium imported laces, hand-beaded fabrics and luxury silks naturally increase the overall investment compared with more minimalist fabric choices. We will more often than not use polyester instead silk as the price is almost half, however we absolutely are more than happy to work with silk.

3. Lace & Embellishment

One of the biggest cost differences comes from embellishment.

For example:

  • Plain fabric with no lace
  • Lace bodice only
  • Lace sleeves
  • Full lace skirt
  • Hand-applied lace motifs
  • Beading
  • Pearls
  • Sequins
  • 3D floral appliqué
  • Hand embroidery

Each additional design element requires additional hours of skilled handwork.

4. Construction Complexity

Not all wedding dresses are built the same.

Some features require substantially more pattern making and construction, including:

  • Corsetry
  • Internal structure
  • Draping
  • Pleating
  • Multiple skirt layers
  • Long trains
  • Overskirts
  • Detachable sleeves
  • Detachable skirts
  • Basque waists
  • Sculptural necklines

These details create beautiful gowns—but they also require significantly more craftsmanship.

5. Customisation

One of the biggest advantages of designing your dress is that you’re not limited to what’s hanging in a showroom.

Many Brides of Armadale brides choose to personalise an existing concept by:

  • Changing the neckline
  • Adding sleeves
  • Lowering or raising the back
  • Changing fabrics
  • Combining multiple dress designs
  • Adjusting skirt volume
  • Adding a split
  • Extending the train
  • Adding detachable pieces

Every design alteration changes the amount of work involved, which influences the overall investment.

✔ Construction

Why Brides Choose Custom Instead of Off-the-Rack

A custom gown isn’t about exclusivity. It’s about individuality.

It’s about wearing something designed specifically for your body, your personality and your wedding.

Instead of compromising on fit or settling for an “almost perfect” dress, custom allows you to create a gown that feels uniquely yours.

Many brides also find that custom gives them the flexibility to combine elements from different dresses, adjust proportions and personalise every detail—something that’s often difficult with ready-made gowns.

Is a Custom Wedding Dress Worth It?

For many brides, the answer is yes. Especially considering not all women have the same body proportion, breast size etc. No woman’s personality is standard and neither are their bodies.

When you’re investing in one of the most important garments you’ll ever wear, the experience can be just as meaningful as the final gown. We here at Brides of Armadale have helped a plethora of Melbourne, Victorian and interstate brides create wedding dresses that reflect their individual style while benefiting from expert design guidance, personalised fittings and in-house alterations.

If you’re dreaming of a gown that’s designed around you rather than asking you to fit into someone else’s design, we’d love to help.
